Ecology Educator/Naturalist

Pono Learning is currently looking to fill a full-time ecology educator/naturalist position. Individuals who are balanced (personally stable, ethical and moral), energetic, child-at-heart (love to be around children and are very good listeners), interested in non-traditional educational philosophies, and who have a strong background in humane education are encouraged to apply.

Pono Learning is a democratic and fully learner-directed education center in Manhattan, New York City, that serves children from the age of 2 ½ to 5 years old. Pono Learning is set up with the purpose of immersing children in rich, stimulating learning environments and harmonious learning communities where each child’s interests and innate desire to learn are cherished, nurtured, and guided to flourish into becoming life-long learners, critical thinkers, and balanced human beings.

General responsibilities include teaching children experientially in the out-of-doors, leading lessons on ecosystems and humane living, building connections with outside agencies, supervising interns, and sharing daily responsibilities with staff members. Experience in teaching is helpful, but not required.

All Pono Learning staff are given an intensive workshop on democratic education before they start teaching and are required to participate in our Professional Development Program which focuses on democratic education; listening to children; communication; and, prejudice reduction.

Humane Education Intern

(Ongoing)

The National Museum of Animals and Society is seeking a Humane Education Intern. The intern's primary responsibilities include "researching and drafting educational text geared towards children for the Museum website, including biographies; generating downloadable and/or printable resources for kids, caretakers and teachers; assisting with humane education programming; providing general programming support; other projects and duties as assigned."

Requirements:

  • Strong interest in history and human-animal studies
  • Ability to think and write engagingly for a young audience
  • Past humane education experience or work experience with children is a plus
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, writing, and verbal skills
  • Well versed in Microsoft Office software applications
  • Ability to work independently
  • Self-motivated essential
  • An artistic background (photography, graphic design, illustration) is beneficial, but not required

Schedule is flexible and the intern will work remotely. This is an unpaid position.
